Is it illegal to not have a working speedometer? Why is my Cavalier speedometer not working? What causes a speedometer to stop working? There are several common causes for a speedometer to stop working. The ECU (engine control unit) converts the driveshaft’s rotation speed to the vehicle’s linear speed and then passes the information to the speedometer.
Your car’s computer is able to translate the rotational speed of the driveshaft into the linear speed of your vehicle , transmitted to you, the driver, through the speedometer.
A speedometer that is not working fails to translate this information and can be a potential risk to drivers. Speedometers are unique in that some of them use physical cables instead of sensors, so a speedometer not working can also indicate a broken cable or stripped gear. One or more dashboard warning lights don’t work. If one or more warning lights fail to illuminate when you first turn the key on, it usually indicates a blown bulb.
But sometimes, the speedometer may not work properly. Common problems include, a faulty sensor , bad. The shaft that turns the car's wheels is connected to the speedometer by a long, flexible cable made of twisted wires.
The cable is a bit like a mini driveshaft: if one end of the cable rotates, so does the other—even though the cable is long and bendy. If the vehicle has an electronic gauge, the cause may be a connectivity problem on the instrument cluster harness. The gauge itself could have stopped working.
Remove the speedometer cable from the bottom of the speedometer with an open-end wrench. Follow the speedometer cable to where it attaches near the drive gear, and loosen the connection with the open-end wrench. Fasten the new cable in place with the open-end wrench near the drive gear. Suddenly my speedometer is not working. Or what else could it be?
Typically, these malfunctions are caused by, a broken gear in the speedometer system, a speed sensor issue or a faulty engine control unit (ECU). A malfunctioning speedometer may also be due to damaged wiring. Wiring is vulnerable to water damage and can cause fuses to blow.
While there are a variety of reasons your Lincoln Town Car speedometer is not working , the most common are the vehicle speed sensor (VSS), a faulty speedometer , or an electrical issue. I swapped them and it works in my car. Everything in the cluster works except the speedometer. It even reacts to the key coming on (centers to 0mph) but it will not move when driving. I drove my car for a few hours with no problems.
The speedometer is on looked up the part on the Internet, there is a small plastic gear at the end of the shaft that fits in the speed sensor, that is probably worn out, so beware of cheap quality replacement parts.
If your speedometer has been dropping to zero, it’s possible that your wiring has been damaged by water. When water comes in contact with certain connections in a car, it can cause blown fuses, each of which controls something different. If the fuse that controls your speedo is blown, it probably won’t work.
Electronic speedometers work in a completely different way.
