Meaning of tyre size

P designates this tire as a passenger car tire, an LT before the tire size would mean the tire is a light truck tire, and a European metric tire would have no letter before the tire size. M – the tire is for motorcycles. NOTE: LT can also stand as a suffix of the code, meaning a tire is for heavy-load vehicles (wide base and flotation tires). It means height of sidewall is 0. R stands for Radial construction tyre. An example of tractor tire sizes expressed in the standard format would be “14. The dash “-” indicates the tire construction is bias-ply, but this could be an “R” if the tire is radial.


The number following the construction code is the size of the wheel that the tire will fit in inches.

The example tire would be designed to fit a 16-inch wheel. The tire size was designed to fit rims or wheels that are inches in diameter. Assuming of course the bigger tyre fits your smaller capacity bike.
