Car wheel alignment explained

It involves three main measurements: caster , camber, and toe. If you hit a massive pothole and bump your suspension out of alignment, the carefully calculated specifications to which the components were set are no longer in effect. What is wheel alignment ? At Halfords Autocentres, we use specialist equipment to accurately adjust the front wheels of your vehicle.

Bad alignment and uneven tire wear symptoms. Proper alignment requires expensive computerized equipment that most people.

How do I know if my car wheels are out of alignment ? How often should the alignment be checked? A slight misalignment of the toe will result in a reduction in tyre life. For minimum tyre wear and power loss, the wheels of a vehicle should be pointing straight ahead.

Wheel Alignment Jargon Buster. So why most vehicles have their front wheels toe-in? If the thrust line is to the left of center, the angle is negative. It refers to the angle and direction at which your tyres are set.

It is caused by rear wheel or axle misalignment and causes the steering to pull or lead to one side or the other.

It is the primary cause of an off-center or crooked steering wheel. Correcting rear axle or toe alignment is necessary to eliminate the thrust angle. In its most basic form, a wheel alignment consists of adjusting the angles of the wheels so that they are perpendicular to the ground and parallel to each other. The purpose of these adjustments is maximum tire life and a vehicle that tracks straight and true when driving along a straight and level road. A wheel alignment is simply adjusting your wheels to make sure they are square with the road and parallel to one another.

A trained technician will measure and make adjustments to the angles and suspension components to make sure your car or truck’s tires are meeting the road evenly. This will also ensure that your car moves straight down the road without pulling to either side. How will wheel alignment help my vehicle?

Keep your wheels pointed in the right direction 5. Requires less energy to keep going hence saving fuel. Ideally, tires should wear evenly across the thread. This is how square the rear axle is to the centre line of the vehicle (thrust line). This will affect how straight the steering wheel is also can affect oversteer and understeer quite severely in some cases.

Alignment variables Be aware when referring to wheel alignment 1mm or ½ a degree can have a large impact on the vehicle overall. The chart below contains different methods manufacturers use for displaying wheel alignment angles. The specifications in the chart are for the front of the vehicle.

Caster is a stability angle, measured in degrees. There is no caster setting for the rear of a vehicle.

Alignment refers to an adjustment of a vehicle’s suspension – the system that connects a vehicle to its wheels. It is not an adjustment of the tires or wheels themselves. The key to proper alignment is adjusting the angles of the tires which affects how they make contact with the road.
