Gear oil grade chart

While the two numbers specify the SAE viscosity grade , the viscosity index shows the temperature related change of viscosity. This page gives an overview of the oil specifications, see also the measurement data of engine oils and gear oils over a wide temperature range. The single grade oils performance would only be measured at 100°C. Gear oils can get remarkably close to performing almost uniformly across the spectrum, with grading like 75W-gear oil being fairly common.

To use this metho the type of gear set, gear geometry, operating temperature and the speed of the slow speed gear must be determined. After calculating the pitch-line velocity of the slowest gear in the unit, the required viscosity grade can be read from the chart using the highest likely operating temperature of the unit. GEAR OILS Gear oil is a fluid lubricant.

Manual gearboxes and differentials use rather highly viscous hypoid gear oils compared to engine oils. Gearboxes do not have an oil pump, so the high viscosity is needed to distribute the oil and to keep it on the metal surfaces, as only the lowermost part of the gears is located in the oil sump. If you have a viscosity equivalent chart , it is easy to double check. Utilize the chart below only to understand the relationship between the two measurement grades. Other factors come into play for which oil is best for your equipment, so be sure to contact your local FS energy specialist for technical support.

Heavier weight, or higher grade oil is more viscous and therefore thicker as it flows between the gears. Light grade oil is ideal for small, fast, polished gears under a light load. Heavy grade oil is suited for large, slow, rough gears under a heavy load. Look for indications that the oil is multi- grade. Refer to the SAE grade marked on the container label.

SAE grades identified by a number and then letter are multi- grade oils. SAE 5W-and SAE 10W-are multi- grade oils. SAE gear lube grade 80W-is equivalent to ISO grade 100. Hydraulic oils, gear lubricants, heat transfer oils, tractor flui grease, food grade oil , rock drill, spindle, automatic transmission fluids, and more.

The designation API GL-denotes lubricants intended for automotive worm- gear axles operating under such conditions of loa temperature, and sliding velocities that lubricants satisfactory for API GL-service will not suffice. Multi- grade oil satisfies the viscosity requirements of one of the W grades at low temperatures and one of the non-W grades at high temperature. It should be noticed that there is no relationship between the SAE engine oil and gear oil classifications. It is suitable for a wide range of Industrial, Agricultural and Commercial applications calling for an EP Gear Oil.

A car in Death Valley would need a higher number to keep the oil from thinning out too much. Each ISO viscosity grade number corresponds to the mid-point of a viscosity range expressed in centistokes(cSt) at 40°C. For example, a lubricant with an ISO grade of has a viscosity within the range of 28. With so many automatic Transmission fluids, it’s hard to choose the one best-suited for each vehicle.

The thicker (higher viscosity ) of an oil , the slower it will flow. You will see oil viscosity measurement in lube articles stated in kinematic (kv) and absolute (cSt) terms.
